Carbon data-ing: The present and future of Blue Carbon research in Ireland

Avery Fenton (Research Assistant)
Blue carbon refers to carbon that is sequestered in marine & coastal ecosystems. In Ireland, this is over 3,000km of coast & immediate shelf area about 5x the size of Ireland’s land mass. Seagrass meadows & saltmarshes are Ireland’s two explicitly defined & protected Blue Carbon Ecosystems, but with so much area to cover the scope of carbon storage in marine ecosystems is not yet fully understood. The BlueC project aims to understand where there is the greatest carbon storage potential, what data currently exists, & where information is required to strengthen our knowledge of Irish blue carbon

Ageing, from the micro to the muscle

Karen Guerrero Vazquez (PhD student)
Ageing is a natural process that we all are going to go through. During ageing, the muscles of our body get weaker. This process is inevitable since it is written in our genes. However, all the genes are regulated for even smaller molecules called microRNA. During this project, we localize the genes that are involved in muscle ageing and identify which microRNA regulates them, creating a map that shows how different genes talk to each other and work together.
With this, we will be able to use the microRNA as therapy for old muscles.

Your brain on books: The science of reading

Dr Ciara Egan (Lecturer in Clinical neuroscience)
For most adults reading seems a quick, effortless, and often enjoyable process. This talk will look at the science of reading: focusing on people who struggle to learn to read such as those with dyslexia, and the different ways people can engage with and enjoy literature.
